Below is an overview of betting volume per country (in Euros), what is paid back to the bettor through pay out of winnings, the amount of total deduction (including taxation) and the part of the deductions returned to racing. The absence of a figure at the latter column does not necesarily mean that no return to racing is made, but that this figure could not be calculated for whatever reason.

The amount returned to racing is usually the fees paid to the racing organization. The racing organization pays from these fees the maintenance of the racing infrastructure, race courses and the prize money. The prize money again pays horse owners for the training of the race horse population.

Unfortunately, new form of gambling, in particular online gambling, facilitate the piracy of the racing product, by which the operator of the bets on certain horse races does not pay the organizer of these races an agreed fee. Many of these piracy betting websites can be found in soft jurisdictions, like Carrebean Islands, Malta, Gibraltar, etc. Should all betting operators chose this illegal way of operating, horseracing would no longer be paid and dissapear as a consequence.
